Serious Illness Can Hide in Your Teeth!

Fifteen years of chronic illness. Fifteen years of dentist after dentist, doctor after doctor, specialist after specialist. All with the same message: “There’s nothing wrong with your teeth, Mr. Wanvig.”

But I knew something was wrong. My body screamed it at me every single day. I felt like a detective in my own body – but the clues I found were dismissed by everyone I sought help from.

Then came the day when the truth finally emerged. Two hidden wisdom teeth. Both infected. Both tucked away in my upper jaw, invisible to most, but quietly and steadily undermining my health from within.

This is the story of how I discovered that serious illness really can hide in your teeth – and how this discovery changed everything.

In my article “One of the Greatest Setbacks of My Life!” I described the background of my illness and my first encounter with Dr. Thomas Rau and his clinic. That’s where hope began to grow again – after years of frustration and despair.

The last dentist I visited before arriving at the clinic even held a professorship in holistic dentistry. He was an expert in the field. He looked at my images, examined me thoroughly, and came to the same conclusion as everyone else: “There’s nothing wrong with you, Mr. Wanvig.”

I couldn’t understand how this was possible. Even I could see something was wrong on the 3D images. But professional dentists with years of education and experience? They didn’t see it.

In hindsight, I’ve come to understand that the reasons are complex. Many dentists simply lack knowledge about hidden inflammations and the consequences of wisdom teeth, cavitations, root canals, implants, and amalgam. And even if they have the knowledge, they often lack effective treatment methods.

There’s another factor that’s rarely discussed. The procedure I eventually underwent to remove my wisdom teeth was technically demanding. The teeth were located only one to two millimeters from my sinuses. This is a difficult procedure that many dentists avoid – perhaps with good reason, if they lack the specialized expertise required.

Interview with Dr. Gunnar Reifert

Dr. Gunnar Reifert was my dentist at the clinic. In my interview with him, we cover many important topics that could be crucial for your own health:

We discuss why dental health is so central to your overall health. It turns out there’s a clear connection between teeth and the organs in the body – problems in the mouth can negatively affect organs in ways most people never consider.

Dr. Reifert explains the most significant dental health problems: why root canals, cavitations, and galvanic currents can create health issues. He also walks through the clinic’s unique methodology for preventing infections after surgeries – a method called PRGFT that I experienced firsthand.

In the interview, you’ll also see clips from my own surgery. It’s not always comfortable to watch, but it provides a genuine glimpse into what actually happens during such a procedure.

The Biggest Dental Health Problems

At the clinic, they’ve treated thousands of patients with serious illness. Time and again, they find the same thing: various dental health problems often lie behind the illness, either as the main cause or as an important contributing factor.

Their experience is clear: Without addressing the underlying issues in the mouth, it’s difficult to heal serious illness. That’s why all patients must undergo a mandatory examination at the dental department. It’s not optional. It’s fundamental.

Root Canals – A Hidden Time Bomb

Let me explain what happens during a typical root canal. When the nerve – what we call the pulp – in the tooth root is dead or damaged due to bacterial infection, the dentist typically performs a root canal. The nerve is excavated, and the root canal is filled with a hard material.

Sounds logical, doesn’t it? The problem is that it doesn’t work that way in practice.

At the clinic, root canals are taboo. They’ve seen time and again how root canal-treated teeth create serious health consequences. Bacterial infections and toxins remain in and around the treated tooth – invisible to the naked eye, but active in the body.

All patients with serious or chronic illness therefore have all root canals removed as standard procedure. “Without this, it’s difficult to heal the cause of serious chronic illness,” explains Dr. Reifert. “The dead tooth must be removed. It can be replaced with an implant, bridge, or similar – but the material must be ceramic, not metal.”

Bacterial Infections in the Jawbone

The jawbone isn’t a solid, dense material. It consists of countless tiny cavities – and in these cavities, bacterial infections can develop. This can happen completely independently of root canals.

A special type of problem is called cavitations. These are areas in the jaw with dead bone tissue, often occurring after wisdom tooth extraction. The insidious thing about cavitations is that they don’t necessarily cause pain or other symptoms you can feel directly.

But the toxic waste products from the infections? They spread. Through blood and lymphatic pathways, they reach all organs in the body. Quietly and steadily. Without you having any idea what’s happening.

To understand the seriousness of this, I recommend the books «The Toxic Tooth: How a root canal could be making you sick» by Dr. Robert Kulacz and “Root Canal Cover Up” by George E. Meining. They describe the consequences in a way that is both thorough and alarming.

Galvanic Current – When Your Mouth Becomes a Battery

According to Dr. Reifert, all types of metals in the mouth can create health problems over time.

One of the reasons is something called galvanic current. This occurs between two different metals in the mouth. Saliva production creates an environment containing enough salt for electrical current to actually flow between the metals. Your mouth literally becomes a small battery.

But it doesn’t stop there. Galvanic current can also occur with just one type of metal – for example, gold or amalgam – if it’s in contact with two electrolytes simultaneously, such as the soft tissue inside the tooth and saliva.

The consequences? Oral galvanic current can create negative effects throughout the body, but especially in the central nervous system and brain. The good news is that diagnosis is simple. A dentist can measure this with a sensitive current meter. At the Paracelsus Clinic, all patients with metal in their mouths are checked for galvanic current.

The solution? Remove all metal from the mouth and replace it with ceramic. It sounds dramatic, but for those with chronic or serious illness, it can be the difference between recovery and remaining sick.

Amalgam – The Nerve Toxin in Your Teeth

Amalgam contains 50 percent mercury. Mercury is a nerve toxin. And this nerve toxin can be one of the main causes of illness.

At the clinic, they remove amalgam from patients as standard procedure. Additionally, they work systematically to remove mercury and other toxic metals that have accumulated in the body over time.

Amalgam removal isn’t something to be done lightly. It takes place under extensive protection for both patient and dentist. Done incorrectly, you can actually release more toxins into the body than if you’d left the fillings alone.

My Personal Experience

The only thing I truly feared when I arrived at the clinic was that they would find major problems with my dental health.

I’ve had dental anxiety since childhood. It followed me until I was nearly 40 years old. Even now, after working to address my fear, I can’t say I long for the smell of a dental clinic or lying in a dental chair.

On my first day of treatment, the dental department took a digital panoramic X-ray of my teeth, gums, and jaws. For a competent dentist, it’s easy to spot diseases related to teeth, gums, and jawbone on such an image. In addition, I went through a series of other tests to look for infections, cavitations, galvanic current, and other problems.

What surprised me most was that they could see problems related to jaw and teeth even in the blood tests. They found, among other things, a high level of something called Rantes Chemokine – a protein that activates leukocytes where there’s inflammation. Dead tissue in jawbone cavitations can lead to a higher concentration of this protein in the blood.

And there the truth emerged. The X-ray showed two hidden wisdom teeth in my upper jaw. Both with bacterial infection and toxins. Blood tests and other examinations confirmed the same picture.

Dr. Rau and Dr. Reifert were clear: This inflammation was a major burden on my body and immune system. The teeth had to be removed. They believed this was likely one of the main causes of my chronically poor health.

The Surgery

Removing my wisdom teeth was no simple matter. They were located only one to two millimeters from my sinuses. If the thin membrane between the wisdom teeth and sinuses were punctured, bacteria from the mouth could leak into the sinuses and infect them.

This is why many dentists avoid such procedures. The risk is high if you don’t have the expertise. But at the clinic, they have a special protocol for handling exactly these situations – including how to seal any punctures.

Dr. Reifert explained that it was important to strengthen my immune system before the surgery. My body needed to be in the best possible condition to handle minor infections optimally. That’s why I was put on an intensive regimen for several days with intravenous infusions of high-dose vitamin C and much more.

The first procedure was a success. After just under an hour, the tooth was out. And – fortunately – the sinus membrane was intact.

The cavity was thoroughly cleaned of bacteria using, among other things, ozone gas, which is highly disinfecting. But it was what happened next that really impressed me.

Activating the Body’s Own Healing

Before the procedure, five tubes of blood were drawn from me. While the surgery was underway, the blood was centrifuged.

A special part of the plasma – the middle third of the centrifuged blood – was then used to fill the cavity left by the tooth. This technique is called PRGFT, which stands for Platelet-released growth factor therapy.

It’s a fascinating method. It activates the body’s own immune system. It creates new blood vessels. It accelerates healing of wounds, connective tissue, cartilage, and hard bone. It improves cell regeneration, relieves pain, and stops bacterial infection.

According to Dr. Reifert, they almost never have problems with infections or pain after oral procedures thanks to this method. The clinic rarely uses antibiotics.

PRGFT is also used for joint arthritis with very good results. The method is even effective in cosmetic treatment of wrinkles and scars – more effective than Botox, but without side effects.

The Result

The following week, the second wisdom tooth was removed. This time also without complications.

After each procedure, I received various types of supplements, herbs, and homeopathic remedies to prevent complications, as well as pain relief.

What surprised me most? I had almost no swelling or pain. After three to four days, everything was back to normal. The follow-up examination showed everything was in perfect order – no infections, no problems.

For someone who had feared this procedure for years, it was almost surreal how smoothly it went.

How to Find Your DentistIf you’re ill or want to prevent illness, my advice is clear: Make dental health your top priority. Not at the bottom of the list – at the top.

The problem is that it can be difficult to find competent dentists who perform biological dentistry at the level required. But let me give you some questions you can ask:

Is your dental health evaluated in relation to your overall health situation? Does the dentist take panoramic X-rays of teeth, gums, and jaw, or 3D images of the jaw? Does the dentist measure oral galvanic current?

How does the dentist diagnose and treat jaw cavitations? How does the dentist diagnose other hidden infections? Does the dentist test filling and implant materials to check if they’re compatible with your body?

Does the dentist use metals or ceramics? Does the dentist use professional protective equipment when removing amalgam?

Be wary of dentists who:

Say there’s no medical research concluding that amalgam can cause health problems. Say they have no concerns about performing root canals. Only take X-rays of a couple of teeth before making a diagnosis.

Don’t use professional protective equipment when removing amalgam, and don’t have a detoxification program for the patient after removal. Treat jaw cavitations without being qualified for the task – which unfortunately can create major problems for the patient afterward.

Relief – And a Message for You

I’m grateful that one of the main causes of my health problems was finally diagnosed and treated in a professional and competent manner.

But the sad truth is that it took many dentists and fifteen years to get there. This says something about the level of competence when it comes to helping patients struggling with serious and chronic illness.

If you recognize yourself in my story – if you’ve gone from specialist to specialist without finding answers – I want to encourage you to take your dental health seriously. The solution might be right there.
