New book, coming in spring 2027

The Way Out of Burnout

Find and remove the causes, recover, and never hit the wall again.

This is the map I should have had in 2003. The book gathers more than twenty years of experience in helping people out of exhaustion and burnout: how you find the causes, remove them, rebuild yourself and prevent it from happening again.

Infinite Vision Publishing, 2027, in Norwegian and English. Price and ordering to come.

Preliminary cover: The Way Out of Burnout by Pål-Esben Wanvig.

About the book

The book I wish had existed in 2003

When my body collapsed on December 23, 2003, there was no map for the road ahead. The doctors found nothing wrong, and vocational rehabilitation was the next suggestion. From 2004 I used everything I had to find out what was actually wrong, and what actually helped.

This book is not an academic study. It is a practical guide, written by someone who has walked the way himself and knows how demanding it can be. I spent many years and large sums finding the answers. You do not have to do the same.

The book builds on the system I use with my clients: four categories of causes, four phases out, and the tools that let you work actively on your own recovery. You can read it from cover to cover, or use it as a reference and jump to the chapter you need right now.

The contents

Five parts, 27 chapters

The book takes you from mapping to action plan, in the order that gives the best results.

  1. Mapping and understandingWhat burnout is and how it develops, and how you map your own situation: the self-analysis, the twelve stages, measuring chronic stress, the strategy and action plan, and how to deal with your doctor, your employer and the welfare system.
  2. The physiological causesHormones, vitamin deficiencies, the gut and the immune system, MCAS and sleep: the physical causes that are often overlooked, and the way out of them.
  3. The psychological causesLow mood and depression, trauma and addiction, the liberating power of forgiveness, and twelve practical tips for finding the way out of low mood.
  4. The behavioral causesSelf-regulation, healthy boundaries, perfectionism, the screen that eats the brain, forest bathing, and goal setting that works when your energy is low.
  5. Hope and the action planThe power of hope, not as positive thinking but as an inner flame, and the action plan with the measures that actually work, in the right order.

Written to be used, not just read.

Every chapter has exercises and reflection questions, and the workbook gathers them in one place.

The people in the book

In the book you meet several of the people I have guided: what became the turning point, and how they not only found their way back to everyday life, but built a life that was better than the one they had before they hit the wall.

“The best thing I have ever done was to study with Pål-Esben Wanvig. He helped me find my way out of my burnout. Today I work and live very well without these challenges. I have changed my mindset and gained good techniques that I use every day, so that I can avoid hitting the wall again.”

Camilla Holm Osberg

From the book The Way Out of Burnout · Translated from Norwegian

Camilla had struggled with the health care system for more than eight years when she came to me. After a few months she was back in full-time work.

You also meet Mari, who collapsed in her early twenties with ME, Atle, the finance manager who took his work home, Cathrine Emilie, who found her way out of a deep life crisis with the forest as her helper, and Stephanie, who lost her husband and found the spark of life again through forgiveness.

No. Life guidance is a separate offer, and you can book a conversation whenever you want. But the book and the workbook let us get started faster.

No. The book is teaching, not treatment. If you are seeking help for illness or health problems, begin with your doctor. The book has its own chapter on how to deal with your doctor, your employer and the welfare system.

Beyond Positive Psychology is about the ability to carry out change, and is the framework. The Way Out of Burnout goes in depth on one thing: how you find and remove the causes of exhaustion and burnout, and rebuild yourself.
